Government and the Military in 2024

Praying for Your Government

In 2014 the Lord put in our hearts to start two prayer initiatives, “Adopt a Senator” and “Adopt an MP”, where we encouraged Christians in Australia to choose one member from each of the houses in the Australian parliament (i.e. the House of Representatives and the Senate) and to pray for them each day.

We continued this prayer initiative today as “Adopt a Senator and Member of Parliament (MP)” on this website. If you have not looked at this initiative, please take a little time to do so and support your governments in prayer. Yes the text of this initiative is still formed around the national government of Australia, but you can adapt it for your local, state/region, and nation governments, wherever God has placed you in the world.

Please remember in prayer the members and leaders of you national and regional parliaments and councils, of the political parties involved in them, and all the public servants that are engaged and directed though them. Also pray for you police and military forces, local and national. They are all under pressure to give in to the temptations of power and control over others, and they need God’s ongoing guidance through the Holy spirit, even if they don’t believe in Him.

Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”
Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’”
(Matthew 4:8-10 NIV)

Praying for our Defence Force:

Psalm 91 describes the security of the one who trusts in the Lord. Not only was it prayed by the psalmist thousands of years ago, but by countless men and women throughout history. For example, during World War I, the 91st Brigade of the Army prayed Psalm 91 together every day. Although they were engaged in three of the bloodiest battles in the war, these soldiers had no combat-related casualties. Not because the passage was a good luck charm or mantra, but because God’s word has power. When we pray His word, we are paving the way for His grace, power and protection to come in our lives and the lives of those we intercede for.

As Hebrews 4:12 says, “The word of God is living and powerful” – powerful because all the power of God’s inherent nature stands behind His word.

Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right for this country, also that our national leaders are sending them out on a task that is from God. That is what we have to pray for: that there is a plan, and that that plan is God’s plan. So bless them with your prayers.
