Praying for the Sphere of Economy and Business
(prepared by Lilian Schmid, edited by Bjorn Schmid, prayerstrategy.org, March 2026)
Global economic stability is being shaken right now by the Middle East conflict, especially the Iran war and the resulting Strait of Hormuz crisis. Energy supply disruptions, soaring oil prices, rising inflation, and weakening business activity are creating a synchronized shock across major economies.
Major Global Economic Pressures Right Now
1. Middle East Conflict & Strait of Hormuz Crisis
- The closure and disruption of the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint for around 20% of global oil and gas shipments, is creating a severe global energy crunch.
- The International Energy Agency (IEA) warns the crisis is equivalent to two oil crises and one gas crash combined, posing a “major threat” to the global economy.
- At least 40 regional energy assets have been severely damaged, pushing oil prices toward $100 per barrel.
- No country is immune developing nations are especially vulnerable to fuel shortages and inflation spikes.
2. Iran War Triggering Global Inflation
- The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) now forecasts 4% inflation across G20 (Group of Twenty) nations, up from 2.8%, due to energy disruptions.
- The US is expected to see even higher inflation, with policymakers shifting toward more hawkish stances.
- Without the conflict, global growth forecasts would have been revised upward; instead, growth is stagnating.
3. Business Activity Slowing Worldwide
- Purchasing Manager Indexes (PMIs) across the U.S., Europe, Australia, and India show sharp declines, signalling weakening economic momentum.
- Input cost inflation in Germany is at its fastest pace in over three years, and UK manufacturing costs have jumped the most since 1992.
- Australia has seen its PMI slump into contraction territory, reflecting the global shock.
4. Oil Supply Shock Worse Than COVID-Era Demand Crash
- The effective closure of Hormuz has removed 11 million barrels per day from global markets – over 10% of global supply.
- Unlike 2020’s demand collapse, this is a supply shock, forcing prices sharply upward and straining household budgets worldwide.
- Jet fuel and diesel are expected to face the earliest and most severe shortages.
How This Affects Nations Economically
Developed Economies
- Can temporarily cushion the blow using strategic petroleum reserves, but these are not long-term solutions.
- Inflation pressures are forcing central banks to consider interest rate hikes, risking slower growth.
Developing Economies
- Limited fuel reserves mean immediate exposure to price spikes.
- Higher transport and food costs are driving rapid inflation and instability.
Asia-Pacific (including Australia)
- Australia’s PMI contraction shows the region is already feeling the shock.
- India, heavily dependent on crude routed through Hormuz, faces heightened vulnerability.
What This Means Going Forward
- If the conflict persists, expect higher global inflation, slower growth, and continued market volatility.
- Energy-importing nations will face the greatest strain, but even exporters will feel the ripple effects through global trade and financial markets.
- Policymakers worldwide are shifting to crisis footing, preparing for prolonged economic turbulence.

Prayer Strategy for Australia’s Business, Trade, Finance & Economy
(by Lilian Schmid, March 2026)
A prayer strategy works best when it is layered, specific, and aligned with how the systems in business, trade, finance, and the economy in Australia function.
Scriptures
Read through and consider these passages from the Holy Bible as you pray for the sphere of Business, Trade, Finance, and the Economy.
- Deuteronomy 28:12
“The Lord will open to you His good treasury, the heavens, to give the rain to your land in its season and to bless all the work of your hands.”
A declaration of provision, timing, and the blessing of labour—perfect for praying over small businesses, agriculture, and national productivity. - Psalm 90:17
“Let the favour of the Lord our God be upon us and establish the work of our hands.”
A grounding scripture for stability, long-term projects, and economic resilience. - Proverbs 11:1 & 11:10-11
“A false balance is an abomination to the Lord, but a just weight is His delight… By the blessing of the upright a city is exalted.”
A powerful meditation for ethical finance, fair trade, transparent regulation, and righteous leadership. - Isaiah 58:11-12
“The Lord will guide you continually… you shall be like a watered garden… you shall rebuild the ancient ruins.”
A scripture for economic renewal, infrastructure, regional recovery, and sustainable growth. - Psalm 24:1
“The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it; the world and all who live in it.”
A reminder of ownership, stewardship, and humility in national economic decisions. - James 1:5
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach.”
A meditation for Treasury, the Reserve Bank, regulators, and economic advisors—wisdom for complex decisions. - 1 Timothy 2:1-2
“Pray for kings and all who are in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and dignity.”
A foundation for praying over economic policy, trade negotiations, and national stability.
Strategic Prayers
(This prayer strategy is written for Australia, but you can adapt it for your own nation as you find the prayers appropriate.)
1. Foundation: Blessing the Economic Gateways
Australia’s economy rests on several “gates” – entry points of influence and flow. Speaking blessing over these gates aligns prayer with real economic structures.
Key gates to cover:
- Small and medium businesses (the backbone of employment and innovation)
- Trade routes and export sectors (minerals, agriculture, education, tourism)
- Financial institutions (banks, regulators, investment bodies)
- Government economic departments (Treasury, Finance, Trade, Industry, Employment)
- Infrastructure (energy, transport, digital networks)
Prayer focus:
- Stability, integrity, and wise stewardship
- Protection from corruption, exploitation, and predatory behaviour
- Creativity, resilience, and ethical prosperity
- Policies that uplift households, workers, and vulnerable communities
2. Covering Business and Industry
Australia’s business landscape is diverse, and each sector carries spiritual and practical weight.
Pray for:
- Small businesses to receive favour, cashflow stability, and relief from unnecessary burdens.
- Innovation sectors (technology, clean energy, advanced manufacturing) to flourish with creativity and global competitiveness.
- Agriculture and regional industries to be protected from drought, market volatility, and supply chain disruptions.

- Universities and education exports – one of Australia’s largest soft‑power assets.
4. Finance, Banking and Monetary Stability
Financial systems shape the wellbeing of households, businesses, and national resilience.
Pray for:
- The Reserve Bank of Australia to steward interest rates with wisdom and clarity.
- Banks to operate with transparency, fairness, and ethical lending.

Economic decisions are shaped by multiple departments and advisory bodies.
Pray for:
- Treasury, Finance, Industry, Trade, Employment, and Social Services to operate with unity and clarity.
- Advisors and analysts to be guided by truth, not ideology or pressure.
- Policies that balance growth with compassion, innovation with sustainability.
- Protection from short‑term political decisions that harm long‑term stability.
Blessing focus:
- Parliamentary committees

- Generosity and compassion
A Covering Prayer

creativity flourish in our industries,
and peace rest upon our trade relationships.
Protect our nation from instability
and guide our leaders with clarity and courage.
Let Australia become a place of ethical prosperity, generosity, and justice.
Establish the work of our hands
and let blessing flow through every economic gate of this land.
