PRAYER FOR OUR JUSTICE SYSTEM
Almighty God, you are a God of justice and righteousness.
We pray for the justice system in our country. Lord, you are just and you are merciful God.
You have given our government authority to establish and maintain justice in this nation.
Your justice is perfect; Your word speaks to us to respect and submit to the decisions of our government, but we also can appeal for consideration and reconsideration.
We want to see Your Kingdom in every part of the sphere of Law and Justice,
we do not ask for an avoidance of justice, but for the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
We pray for those struggling with legal issues; bring them peace and confidence.
Let justice prevail in all areas of the departments of law and justice in this country.
Give our judges sound minds and good conscience to deliver decisions based on biblical and moral values.
Show them more of you and your ways.
God, you are the best and final judge of all.
We trust you now and always.
In Jesus’ name. Amen
Isaiah 58:6-9:
Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:
to loose the chains of injustice
and untie the cords of the yoke,
to set the oppressed free
and break every yoke?
Is it not to share your food with the hungry
and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter-
when you see the naked, to clothe them,
and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?
Then your light will break forth like the dawn,
and your healing will quickly appear;
then your righteousness will go before you,
and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.
Then you will call, and the Lord will answer;
you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.
Prayer for those in Prison
Father God, your love is great and extends beyond walls and borders. You see the men and women who are living behind bars here in our city and throughout our country. We pray that you have mercy on them. We pray for their families and children. Amen.
The prophet Amos says, “May justice roll down like a river, and righteousness like a never failing stream.”

From the Australian Government Attorney-General’s Department website:
Separation of powers and independence of judges
The power to make laws in Australia is divided between the executive, the parliament and the judiciary. This is known as the separation of powers doctrine and is an essential feature of the Australian system of government.
Under Australia’s Constitution, our judiciary is independent from the other arms of government. The separation of powers doctrine means that in interpreting and applying the law, judicial officers act independently and without interference from the parliament or the executive. The constitutional guarantees of tenure and remuneration assist in securing judicial independence.
Federal judicial officers are appointed by the government of the day and cannot be removed from office except on the grounds of proved misbehavior or incapacity. The remuneration of judicial officers cannot be reduced while the judge holds office.

THE PRAYER OF SUPPLICATION
(From Des Higgs, 24 April 2018)
The phrase “surfs and villains’ does gross injustice to the serfs of the middle ages because, although they were peasants, they were not slaves who could be bought and sold.
Although they were at the lowest level of the medieval social system, they were love slaves to the Lord of the Manor. When they had personal wants they were free to come to their master with a petition. This was, in the language of the Elizabethan times, a supplication – they were suppliants.
There are times when we feel like suppliants [a humble petitioner] and come like little children to our Father for special help. We can come without feeling guilty for selfishness, which occurs only if our requests deprives someone of a benefit or privilege. Sometimes we feel that we are no more than unprofitable servants who have only done what was our duty to do. Luke 17:10.
1 Timothy 2:1 urges us with “I exhort , first of all, that supplications with thanksgiving be made …” The important invisible word here is ‘HUMBLE’.
Let your requests be made known to God. Ask and it shall be given you. You have not because you ask not. Men everywhere should pray, lifting up holy hands without wrath and doubting.
Keep your spirit clean and wholesome and fresh through frequent supplications.
Des Higgs.

Final Prayer
Father, you have given all peoples one common origin.
It is your will that they be gathered together
as one family in yourself.
Fill the hearts of mankind with the fire of your love
and with the desire to ensure justice for all.
By sharing the good things you give us,
may we secure an equality for all
our brothers and sisters throughout the world.
May there be an end to division, strife and war.
May there be a dawning of a truly human society
built on love and peace.
We ask this in the name of Jesus, our Lord.
Amen.
