Daily Prayers in October

  1. Prayer for the Hon Sussan Ley MP: Minister for Health and Aged Care

Sussan Ley was first elected as the Federal Member for Farrer in NSW in 2001. Before entering Parliament, Minister Ley worked a variety of jobs which provided a range of 'real life' experiences. At age 19, she enrolled in flight school and gained her commercial pilot's licence, which she still holds. This led to roles as an air traffic controller and commercial pilot - she has also been a shearer's cook, wool and beef farmer. While raising three children, ten years of part time study led to a Bachelor of Economics, Master of Taxation Law and a Master of Accounting before she took up a senior position with the Australian Taxation Office.

Since 2004 Ms Ley has been allocated responsibility in a number of portfolio areas and was appointed Minister for Health and Minister for Sport in December 2014. On 30 September 2015, the Aged Care portfolio was added to Ms Ley's responsibilities. Living in and representing regional Australia, the Minister is a strong advocate for regional and rural issues, especially those which assist in bridging the city-country divide.

    Prayer:
Dear Father in Heaven, I pray that you will provide good and godly wisdom to the Hon Sussan Ley.
I ask that you provide a team of godly people around her, so they will support her and encourage her to lead the ministry of Health according to your way Father God. Let your will be done in the department of Health as it is in Heaven.
We ask this in Jesus' name Amen.

  2. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health

    Please pray for Indigenous Health:

The Australian Government is committed to the delivery of effective and efficient health services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. In 2014-15 more than $920 million will be spent on the provision of health programmes specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This includes Medicare and access to pharmaceuticals through the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS). Overall, funding levels for Indigenous health will continue to grow over the next four years. From 2014-15 to 2017-18, the Australian Government will invest $3.1 billion in Indigenous specific health programmes and activities - an increase of over $500 million compared to 2009-10 to 2012-13 (excluding funding provided through Medicare and access to the PBS).

The Indigenous Australians' Health Programme was established on 1 July 2014, consolidating four existing Indigenous health funding streams: primary health care base funding; child and maternal health activities; Stronger Futures in the Northern Territory (Health); and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Chronic Disease Fund. This provides more flexibility to ensure funding is allocated to where the need is greatest and reduces red tape and workloads for grant recipients. A new funding allocation methodology for Indigenous health funding will be developed by the Department of Health during 2014-15 and implemented from 2015-16. This will ensure investments are directed to areas of need, priorities and population growth and deliver the most effective outcomes.

This funding allocation methodology will include funding under the Indigenous Australians' Health Programme for Indigenous specific comprehensive primary health care, child and maternal health services, the Stronger Futures in the Northern Territory (Health) and activities under the former Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Chronic Disease Fund. The Australian Government through the 2014-15 Budget will also expand activities in key areas to close the gap and achieve health equality between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians, including child and maternal health, and improved chronic disease prevention and management. The Government is expanding programmes that have demonstrated their effectiveness in improving health outcomes including:

$94 million to expand efforts to improve child and maternal health through Better Start to Life; and

$36.2 million to expand the Healthy for Life programme into a further 32 Aboriginal community controlled health organisations to improve the management of chronic disease.

Indigenous people in remote areas of the Northern Territory will also have access to essential services through the $11.9 million re-investment from 2015-16 for Indigenous primary health care service delivery amongst high needs populations in the Northern Territory and to enable some regions to move to community control.

    Prayer:
Divine Father, how our hearts yearn to express our love for you!
Thank You for Your grace. Thank You for knowing exactly what we need before we even ask. Thank You for never abandoning us or leaving our children begging for bread. Thank You for being our faithful source. We have always been able to depend on your goodness.
We take delight in You, Lord. We commit everything we do to you because we know we can trust you to help us. You direct our steps and you delight in every detail of our lives. Even though we sometimes stumble, we will never fall because you hold us by your hand.
You love us with an unfailing love and your faithfulness endures forever. We find comfort in knowing that the very hairs on our heads are all numbered. Therefore, we are not afraid because we know how much you value us.

  10. Mental Health

A mental illness is a health problem that significantly affects how a person thinks, behaves and interacts with other people. It is diagnosed according to standardised criteria. One in 5 Australians will suffer from a mental illness in any given year. A mental health problem also affects how a person thinks, feels, and behaves, but to a lesser extent than a mental illness. Mental illnesses are of different types and degrees of severity.

Some of the major types are:

    • anxiety
    • schizophrenia
    • bipolar mood disorder
    • personality disorders
    • eating disorders
    • depression

These illnesses may also be referred to as a mental disorder, mental impairment or psychiatric disability.

  11. National Men's and Women's Health

The Australian Government has committed to developing National Men's and Women's Health Policies, to ensure that specific health needs of both men and women are addressed. The policies were developed in consultation with state and territory governments, health service providers, consumer and advocacy groups and the community.

    Scripture:
1 Corinthians 19-20 "Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honour God with your bodies."

  12. Palliative Care

The Australian Government recognises the importance of helping people who are terminally ill access the best care and support available to maintain their dignity and quality of life.

The Australian Government continues to provide financial assistance to state and territory governments to operate palliative care services, a form of sub acute care, as part of their health and community service provision responsibilities.

On 1 April 2016 the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) agreed a Heads of Agreement between the Commonwealth and the States and Territories on public hospitals funding (the Agreement) from 1 July 2017 to 30 June 2020 ahead of consideration of longer-term arrangements. In return for additional funding, the States have been asked to develop and implement a range of reforms to improve health outcomes and decrease demand for public hospital services by 1 July 2017. These include coordinated care for patients with chronic and complex disease; incorporating quality and safety into hospital pricing; and reducing avoidable hospital readmissions.

In May 2015, the Government announced the successful organisations to receive funding under the National Palliative Care Projects until June 2017. Projects funded will support quality service delivery, by focusing on the following areas:

    • service provider skill development (frontline worker education and training);
    • service quality improvement (in acute and community health settings);
    • research and benchmarking (build and enhance capacity within the palliative care sector);
    • advance care planning (strengthen understanding and uptake);
    • knowledge building and awareness (improve sector knowledge and community awareness);
    • improve collaboration and linkages between all Governments' palliative care activities; and
    • collate and distribute palliative care information across the sector.

The Australian Government has considered the 38 recommendations made in the Report, and detailed responses in relation to each recommendation of the Senate Community Affairs References Committee report on Palliative Care in Australia (the Report) are below. Details are correct at time of drafting. More information here if you wish to know more

Eye health conditions are very common in Australia, and may be present from birth, as a result of illness or injury, or developed over time. Five common eye health conditions affecting Australians are cataract, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration and uncorrected refractive error. Living with a vision disorder may cause disadvantage due to delayed childhood learning, reduced participation in education and employment, and social isolation.

    Prayer:
Pray that God restore the eyesight of people who are blind in this nation and help researchers in finding the best cures for them. We pray for more provision, more support and total healing.

  16. Chronic Disease Prevention and Service Improvement Fund

The Chronic Disease Prevention and Service Improvement Fund is an initiative administered by the Department of Health to support initiatives that address the rising burden of chronic disease.

    Fund objectives:
The objective of the fund is to support targeted action related to chronic disease prevention and service improvement, particularly within the primary care and community sectors to:

    • Reduce the incidence of preventable mortality and morbidity
    • Maximise the wellbeing and quality of life of individuals affected by chronic disease from initial diagnosis to end of life
    • Reduce the pressure on the health and hospital system including aged care and
    • Support best practice in the prevention, detection, treatment and management of chronic disease.

    Fund priority areas:
The following priority areas were identified to achieve the fund's objectives and translate its key principles into practice:

    • Prevention across the continuum
    • Early detection and appropriate treatment
    • Integration and continuity of prevention and care and
    • Self management.

    Scripture:
    Psalm 40

  17. GP Super Clinics

Australia needs a health care system that keeps people well, not just one that looks after them when they are sick. This requires a primary health care system that is efficient, lowers rates of avoidable hospital admissions, reduces health inequalities and improves health outcomes. Around $650 million has been committed to:

    • build more than 60 GP Super Clinics around Australia and
    • for Primary Care Infrastructure Grants to upgrade and extend around 425 existing general practices, primary care and community health services, and Aboriginal Medical Services.

GP Super Clinics are a key element of the strategy to build a stronger primary health care system, including a greater focus on management of chronic disease, health promotion and illness prevention and better coordination between privately provided GP services, community health and other state or territory government services.

It is intended that each GP Super Clinic will bring together general practitioners, practice nurses, allied health professionals, visiting medical specialists and other health care providers to deliver primary health care services aimed at addressing the health care needs and priorities of their local communities. This multi-disciplinary, patient centred model of care is attractive to many health care providers as well as patients.

    Scripture:
Luke 12:24 "Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds!"

  18. Maternity services

    National Maternity Services Plan:
On 12 November 2010, the National Maternity Services Plan was endorsed by the then Australian Health Ministers' Conference. The plan recognises the importance of maternity services within the health system and provides a strategic national framework, as endorsed by state, territory and Commonwealth governments for the five year period 2010-2015. The Maternity Services Inter-Jurisdictional Committee (MSIJC) has been delegated the responsibility of developing, supporting and monitoring the actions of the plan.

  20. Persons with Chronic Illness and Pain

    Scripture:
1 Peter 5:10 "The God of all grace who called you to his eternal glory through Christ [Jesus] will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you after you have suffered a little."

    Prayer:
God of Compassion, you willingly took on our human condition to experience the same pain, suffering and death that we do.
Through your Son's resurrection, you transformed suffering and death into new life and glory; and invite us to join our own pain and struggles to those of Jesus. Increase the faith and hope of all who are suffering, especially those living with chronic illness and pain. Strengthen and confirm in them the promise of new life and glory.
We pray this through the intercession of Our Lady of Lourdes and in the name of your Son, Jesus and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.

  21. Rheumatic heart disease

Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is chronic damage to the valves of the heart, caused by repeated episodes of acute rheumatic fever (ARF).

While ARF is rare in industrialised countries, it remains a significant cause of disease in Australia among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. Poor living conditions make streptococcal infections and therefore ARF, more likely. Known risk factors include poverty, overcrowding and limited access to medical care for diagnosis and treatment.

To address the high rates of acute rheumatic fever (ARF) and rheumatic heart disease (RHD) among Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, the Australian Government is funding the Rheumatic Fever Strategy, which includes:

    • state-based register and control programs in the Northern Territory, Western Australia, South Australia and Queensland,
    • to improve detection, monitoring and management of ARF and RHD and a National Coordination Unit (RHD Australia)
    • to develop national education and training resources, support jurisdictions and establish a data collection system.

Pray for the removal of the curses of this disease and for healing and restoration:
    Lord God,
    We dwell in your house,
    Drink in your presence
And find peace and rest in your arms.
    We believe in your name,
    Ask for your healing
And believe and trust in your love.
We thank you for your sacrifice,
Receive all you have for us
And pray and ask for restoration.
    We need your touch.
    We wait on you.
You are our Saviour, our friend, and our hope.
    Amen.

  23. Pray for Persons Suffering from War

May they be held in your loving care and protection and given the strength to endure great suffering and hardship.
